Editor, Proofreader, and Cover Artist Opportunities

We’re growing! Etopia Press is looking for a few good cover artists, content editors, copyeditors, and proofreaders to add to our freelance team.

Artists

We’re looking for a couple of experienced cover artists familiar with digital publishing and its specific requirements and budgets. Strong background and willingness to design for all romance genres and heat levels, including erotic romance and gay romance, is required. If you’re also familiar with YA, SF/F, and/or horror, that’s a plus.

Please send a resume, including any publishers you currently design for (so we can see your every-day, actual work, not just your best portfolio), your standard turn-around time, and your rates for both front covers and print wraps to Shelly at production@etopia-press.net.

Content Editors

At Etopia Press, editors have the opportunity to build a strong stable of authors by acquiring manuscripts from our very busy general submissions box, by networking with authors and soliciting submissions directly, and now and then by assignment (which are always optional). You’ll start at a competitive flat fee per word (rather than a risky percentage of sales) plus sales bonuses. Editors who consistently turn in great work and whose books do well in the marketplace are rewarded with rate increases and higher sales bonuses.

If you know the inner workings of story craft, plot structure, character development, pacing, point of view, etc.; the specific genre conventions of your preferred genres; and are familiar with Chicago style (including when NOT to apply it), we should talk.

We’re looking to fill about five more slots in the following genres
■  Erotic Romance, including the hotter varieties such as ménage and fetish and same-sex partners.
■  M/M and other LGBT romance, all heat levels
■  Horror

Requirements
■  MS Word (Open Office and other programs are not sufficient)
■  Excellent knowledge of *fiction*– story craft, prose craft, and genre conventions
■  Basic familiarity with Chicago style and the differences in applying it to creative writing vs. non-fiction or scholarly writing
■  Knowledge of electronic document editing, including use of track changes and comments
■  Daily email availability
■  The ability to make deadlines without sacrificing quality
■  Willingness to edit to our house style, even if it’s not how they did things at that other place.
■  Familiarity with digital publishing and the differences between editing for the print world and e-publand (i.e. don’t ask for EFA rates because we don’t pay them up front. However, authors with strong backlists can earn their editors quite generous sales bonuses over time).

Please send your resume with your relevant editing experience, including any publishers you’ve formerly edited for or currently edit for, to Teagan Chase at: teaganchase@etopia-press.net.

We look forward to adding you to our team!

Copyeditors

We’re looking for three to five excellent copyeditors with *fiction* experience. Non-fiction, technical, or scientific experience is not sufficient unless you also have some other relevant experience with fiction publishing. You must have a great grasp of fiction craft and voice and know what makes fiction editing different from non-fiction editing. You’ll need to know and own a copy/subscription to CMOS 16th (not earlier editions) and MW 11th Collegiate (not other dictionaries or editions). We pay a competitive flat fee per word, rather than a risky percentage of sales (but it’s not EFA rate, so you need to understand the digitial-first industry). Editors who consistently turn in great work are rewarded with regular rate increases, and if you’re interested, there’s opportunity for advancement.

Please send your resume with your relevant editing experience, including any publishers you’ve formerly edited for or currently edit for, to Teagan Chase at: teaganchase@etopia-press.net.

We look forward to adding you to our team!

Proofreaders

We’re looking for three to five proofreaders with an eye for detail and the ability to find that smallest of errors. We’re not looking for copyeditors for this position–that’s a different skill set entirely. For proofreaders, we’re specifically looking for those people who have the ability to see the words on the page rather than the story, and who understand how to read slowly and carefully for typos, misspellings, missing or extra words, and other small errors that easily slip past the eyes of editors and authors.

This is an entry-level position, and there’s plenty of room for advancement both within the proofreading department and to other editorial positions within the company.

Please send your resume with your relevant proofreading experience, including any publishers you’ve formerly or currently work for, to Teagan Chase at: teaganchase@etopia-press.net.

We look forward to adding you to our team!
