Three New Romance Imprint Guidelines

1. Etopia Romance

To add to all the wonderful romance currently “in the pipe,” we’re putting out a call for more great romance stories in the following subgenres:

Contemporary Romance

Historical Romance

Western Romance

Paranormal Romance

Romantic Suspense

Action/Adventure Romance

Media and Sports Romance

Inspirational Romance

Upmarket Women’s Fiction

For all our traditional romances, the
level of sensuality may go from sweet (no love scenes) to “closed
door” (implied love scenes that happen “off stage” and aren’t depicted
in the story), to love scenes described in euphemistic language, to more fully
realized love scenes using contemporary, explicit language. But in all cases,
the sensuality is meant to enhance the romance, and should not be the main
focus of the story.

For inspirational romance, please keep the level of
sensuality, language, slang, etc. appropriate to the genre. While we won’t
refuse stories dealing with real-life or difficult themes, which are often at
the  heart of our more poignant spiritual
struggles, these must be addressed and resolved in a spiritually and morally uplifting
fashion.

Please make sure traditional romances follow these rules:

1. The romantic couple may not have a sexual relationship
with anyone else.

2. The romantic couple may not be married to others during
the course of the story.

3. There must be a happily-ever-after, or in the case of
certain series, at least a happy-for-now ending.

4. If the book contains consummated love scenes, characters
in contemporary romances must practice safe sex. For certain historicals,
paranormals, fantasy romances, etc. where the story demands, this requirement
may be waived. But that will be an exception, rather than the rule.

4. Interracial, multicultural, BBW, May/December, LGBT, etc.
are welcome—diversity is a Good Thing.

5. Novels only. Word counts: 45,000 to 110,000 words

2. Etopia Rush!

Etopia Rush! is Etopia Press’s new erotic romance imprint. These stories are
first and foremost romance—they must have a happily-ever-after or a
happy-for-now ending, and must have at their core a developing love
relationship. But these books also have a high degree of sexuality and
eroticism that cannot be separated from the story. The characters are
inherently sexual, and their sexual relationship is a natural result of their developing
relationship. Stories should possess more love scenes than a mainstream
romance, and use no euphemistic language. The sex scenes should be graphic and
explicit—and hot. Like the rest of the story, the sex scenes should actively
engage the reader. All romance readers want to feel the love, but erotic romance readers also want to feel the sex!

Stories can be any subgenre, including:

Contemporary Romance

Historical Romance

Western Romance

Paranormal Romance

Romantic Suspense

Action/Adventure Romance

Media and Sports Romance

BDSM Romance

Sexual content may include kink, fetish, bondage, D/s, multiple partners, and other alternative sexualities that may be offensive to some traditional romance readers. We’d love to see more LGBT, interracial, multicultural, BBW, May/December, and other kinds of variety and diversity (although this is true of all our imprints in all our genres).

Etopia Rush! stories should have:

1. Lots of hot, delicious sex! Take us with your characters
as they feel that rush of desire, of erotic love, of sexual pleasure. No
euphemistic language—keep it real, and keep it sexy!

2. No adultery and no cheating. The romantic pair (or more)
may not be married to others during the course of the story. In couples
stories, the romantic couple may not have casual sex or a sexual relationship
with anyone else once they have sex with each other. Previous lovers or
situations may be OK, depending on the storyline. Your characters may be sexy
and insatiable, but they only have eyes (and lips and hands and other things)
for each other.

3. In ménage and multiple partner stories, the characters
must still be involved in a romantic, emotional relationship with one another—it’s
not about casual sex. Characters involved with the multi relationship may have
sex occasionally as couples, but only with other members of the multi
relationship (that is, no one-nighters with outsiders—no cheating). In Etopia Rush! the “multi” relationship should develop and remain intact throughout the story and contain a
happily-ever-after or happy-for-now ending for all, or at least most, of the
characters, depending on the storyline. However, stories about a couple who
have casual sex with others and remain only a couple at the end are more
appropriate for the Etopia ’Rotica line. Remember, Etopia Rush! stories are still, at their heart, romance. We still want love and some initial form of commitment along
with the hot sex!

4. Safe sex. This is required for contemporary stories.
Certain historical, fantasy, etc. stories may be exempt from this requirement,
but this will be the exception rather than the rule.

5. Word counts: 2,500 to 90,000 words

6. All characters must be 18 years
of age or older, even in historicals and fantasy.

7. In addition to your hottest
male/female stories, we’d love to see your m/m, f/f, ménage, poly, interracial,
multicultural, BBW, May/December, kink, fetish, BDSM, and other stories that
take sexy to the edge!

Stories may not contain:

  1. Sex between characters under the age of 18.
  2. Rape for titillation (exploring it for literary
reasons is ok, but rape is a crime, not a turn-on. Capture fantasy, dubious
    consent stories, etc. are OK.
  3. Pedophilia or incest.
  4. Necrophilia or bestiality (vampires, shapeshifters,
    aliens, and other sentient non-humans
    are OK).
  5. bodily functions, i.e. “golden showers.”

3. Etopia ‘Rotica

From literary erotica to sexual adventure, Etopia ‘Rotica is pure, molten desire. This is erotica at its hottest, no romance required. The only requirement is eroticism, and the pure joy of sex. Etopia ‘Rotica is sex incarnate.

These stories should be bold and unafraid. A woman’s or man’s sexual journey, fantasy, interlude, adventure…this is where the mind and body run free and prudish limits are left behind. All kinds of erotic stories are welcome, as long as they celebrate the beauty and joy of sex.

Etopia ‘Rotica stories should be:

1. About sex. Not only do the characters have it, but sex
should be integral to the story in some way.

2. Adultery and cheating are sometimes present in
“sexual journey” or “sexual coming of age” stories. This is
fine if it fits the story. Casual or uncommitted sex is also OK. However all
main characters should be basically “good” people (excluding villains,
if any). These should not be stories of the sick and twisted — we have a horror
line for that!

3.There does not have to be a happily-ever-after or
happy-for-now ending. There does not have to be an emotional relationship or
commitment (although there may be—it depends on the story). Erotic stories that
follow the traditional romantic plot arc and have these types of endings should
be directed to Etopia Rush!

4. Kink, fetish, BDSM, ménage and poly, interracial,
multicultural, LGBT, and all sorts of sexual fantasy are welcome. The hotter, the
more erotic, the better.

5. Word counts: 2,500 to 110,000 words

6. All characters must be 18 years of age or older, even in historical and fantasy subgenres.

Etopia ‘Rotica may not contain:

  1. Sex between characters under the age of 18.
  2. Rape for titillation (exploring it for literary reasons is ok, but rape is a crime, not a turn-on. Capture fantasy, dubious consent stories, etc. are OK.
  3. Pedophilia or incest.
  4. Necrophilia or bestiality (vampires, shapeshifters, aliens, and other sentient
    non-humans are OK).
  5. bodily functions, i.e. “golden showers” and the rest.

Enter our Two New Contests! Win a Book Contract or Three!

Contest 1: Etopia New Author Novel Contest

Calling all new, unpublished authors! Do you have a great story that’s waiting to be told? A hot manuscript with all the passion you could ask for…and more? Then we want to see it.

Each of our three imprints—Etopia Romance, Etopia Rush! and Etopia
‘Rotica—will be offering a publishing contract to the best novel-length story
in each imprint. All subgenres and heat levels are welcome, as long as they fit
the content guidelines for the appropriate imprint. All novels must be 45,000
or over.

The rules are as easy as one, two, three!

One—Send us the first three chapters of your manuscript plus a 5-page synopsis (the
manuscript must be completed—no works-in-progress, please!) and must follow our
submission guidelines exactly.

Two—Name your manuscript files like this:

EtopiaRomanceBAC_YourTitle_ByYourName_Manuscript.rtf

EtopiaRomanceBAC_YourTitle_ByYourName_Synopsis.rtf

Three—Email them to submissions@etopia-press.net between Monday, July 11, 2011 and Friday, September 30, 2011, midnight PST.

Entries will be judged on plot structure, characterization, opening “hook,” originality, adherence to genre conventions, eroticism (in the case of Rush! and ‘Rotica entries) author voice, and correctness of grammar and style. Authors of the top three partials for each imprint will be invited to submit the complete manuscript. The best manuscript for each imprint will receive a publishing contract from Etopia Press.

All entries and rights to entries remain the property of their authors unless a contract is offered, at which time, standard contracting procedures will apply. Official Rules can be found here.

Contest 2. Etopia Rush! Series Contest

Is one story not enough of a challenge? Do you like to revisit your fantasy worlds over and over with new characters, or tie stories together in a common setting or theme? Or maybe you like to write sexy and short…

Then our Rush! Series Contest is for you!

This contest is open to both published and unpublished
authors. We’re specifically looking for series comprised of three stories—trilogies—that
involve three different romantic tales. Each should feature different couples
(or triples or more, for ménage or poly stories) and each story must be connected
by some kind of “big picture” element—a larger plot arc that begins
in the first story and isn’t resolved until the third, a shared setting like an
apartment building or workplace or wolf pack, a shared relationship like three
sisters or brothers or army buddies. Whatever it is, it must be a strong
connection that binds the characters and their stories together into an
inseparable whole. The winner will receive a three-book contract for the series from Etopia Press!

All subgenres and word counts are acceptable, as long as
they fulfill the requirements of Etopia Rush! (above).

Here’s How To Enter
